A Quantitative Study on the Cohesion Problems in English Majors’ Chinese Translation of English Texts

Cohesion is an important means to achieve textual coherence. In translation instruction, it raise students’ awareness of cohesion in order improve their competence. However, few studies have been conducted investigate the problems that may exist translated texts. This article compares cohesive devices used Chinese texts from English by 38 junior majors studying a major university China with those reference version, for purpose revealing and providing instruction. The results show include overuse personal conjunction, especially additive insufficient use ellipsis repetition which are common original reveal, on one hand, students still be under influence source language negative transfer, other they understanding differences between this regard.
